Weekly Music List...Detroit Version

Listen closely...If you don't know about Detroit and the influence that city has had on the world of music, then you either live under a rock or you just are not that homed in on reality. Not only has Detroit been a influence in all types of music but a major voice in the world of Hip Hop and modern urban music. With the success of Eminem and his loyalty to the city, the world has opened up to a host of artists. What people don't realize though is that Eminem rose through the ranks of the Motown hip hop scene. I personally remember seeing Em for the first time back in the 90's at an open mic that was at the opening of this urban gear store. Don't get me wrong here, he was amazing then, but was he the best? The beauty of the D, there were multiple super mc's that were all around the city all through the 90's. So without going into all these artists I'd rather you listen to some of the new ones. First up is one of the big young artists emerging from the Motor City, Black Milk. If you don't know who he is I'll list some of the artists hes worked with, production-wise. KRS-one, Buckshot album, Bishop Lamont, Elzhi, Pharoah Monch and the list goes on. Here is one of my favorite tunes from his newest album:

Next up is a young cat named Fowl. Love this dude's flow, hes gonna be great, reminds me of Beanie mixed with Nas. Check out his video...

Next up is probably the most popular of the Detroit artists out right now. Danny Brown has been rhyming for a while but only just recently, thanks to his crazy kamakazi style marketing techniques. The only difference with him and the other self promoted artists is that he actually is mad talented. Check out one of my favorite cuts from the infamous Mr. Brown.

Keeping with the meaningful tunes I have to include the queen of Detroit Underground Hip Hop. Invincible has been around for quite a while and with several albums under her belt and many many songs with ranging topics from unemployment to political corruption. This song I chose is about mental health which is a very hot topic these days. Respect to the utmost Invincible.

The next artist hopefully doesn't need much of an introduction, if he does, then maybe this is not the right blog for you. After being in the mega Detroit group of Slum Village, El went out on his own. The first full album is a tribute to arguably one of the greatest hip hop albums ever, Illmatic by Nas. Elzhi's version is called Elmatic and is amazing. He redoes all the tracks into Detroit anthems. I guess it was my dude HouseShoes idea, I'm gonna have to ask him about that. Anyway, here is one of the videos from the album.

Last up is a song from Black Milk's latest album called Deadly Medley. The song features Milk, Elzhi and another heavy hitter, Royce Da 5'9". Later till next week, keep bobbin your head, hip hop is never dead.

Next week, West Coast goodies: Georgia Anne Muldrow, Pharcyde and others.
